The Pines Reserve

Description

What is still a delightful picnic spot was once a part of a 70 acre experimental forest reserve which trialled the growth of both european and  native tree species.

'The Pines' is where much of Kapunda's early social activity took place.  The Forestry Board encouraged the local community to use use this area for recreational enjoyment, and enjoy they did, with many picnics and community festivities held here.   Amenities at the time included 2 long drops, a tennis court and 3 rustic  barbeques in the shap of stone chimneys with open fires.

Fifty years after it was established a contract was let to fell the trees on the reserve.  The local newspaper story read:

"We understand the government has let a contract to cut the pines on   the reserve at Taylor's Gap.  Although those beautiful trees were planted with the object of being eventually cut and used, local residents will regret that the time has arrived when they must come down.  The Pines have been recognized as one of the beauty spots of the district".

As is usual in these situations, a period in time passed.  Today, thanks to a small group of volunteers, the area offers a walking trail.  Enjoy the sights of the seasonal delicate wildflowers and the tranquil sounds of the breeze in this relaxing and tranquil spot.

You can also view the old Turncock House and shallow remains of Taylor's Run Reservoir, the source of Kapunda's early water supply for many years.  Water was reticulated from this reservoir to Kapunda via a gravitational flow.
