MARY MACKILLOP WALK

Description

Located on the Glimpse's Trail, the Mary MacKillop Walk pays homage to Sister Mary MacKillop, founder of the Order of St Joseph.    Sister Mary visited Kapunda on several occasions to oversee the establishment of a number of schools in the region, including the supervision and conversion of the old St John's Church to a Girl's Reformatory in 1897.

This particular trail outlines the route regularly traveled by Sister Mary and other parishioners as they made the journey between Kapunda and St John's Catholic Church to celebrate Mass.  It joins Reformatory Road to complete journey to the church.  The trail can be walked or driven.

Try to put yourself in their shoes for a moment.  Imagine walking this track to attend weekly Mass in soaring summer temperatures, dressed and covered head  to foot in more than one layer of clothing which was typical of the fashions and respectability  of that particular era!  Whew!!

Use caution - the Trail is a dirt track and crosses a ford on the River Light. This can present difficult or possibly dangerous conditions in heavy weather.  Do not attempt to cross the ford when the river is running.
